US union lobbies Ahold over distribution jobs

Representatives of the American Teamsters trade union are in the Netherlands on Wednesday to lobby shareholders at grocery group Ahold’s annual meeting.

The Teamsters say Ahold is outsourcing thousands of union jobs in the US to non-unionised companies and breaking promises made to workers, community leaders and environmentalists.
The union claims Ahold has a policy of giving its distribution operations to low-wage operations with warehouses often hundreds of miles from Ahold-owned stores and closing unionised facilities.
Ahold earns over half its income in the US.
