DENVER — When Hostess went bankrupt and announced that it was closing, the company laid off hundreds of Denver workers.

However the generosity of the community is helping those affected.

Teamsters Local 455 hosted a holiday open house and benefit Saturday for 114 families that were laid off after Hostess shut down in November.

“For a lot of us that have families, we don’t know what our next move is,” said Jose Canales.

Canales was let go three weeks ago after working route sales for Hostess for 13 years.

“I never thought I would end up facing something like this. I’m down to the last $100 in my bank account,” Canales said.

The Teamster’s benefit raised money through a raffle and silent auction in order to help those like Canales who could use a little bit of support this holiday season.

All proceeds went directly to the members and their families to assist them with food, bills, and other expenses.
