Workers at California Flour Plant Join Teamsters Local 166  Teamster.org  …On February 3, workers at Ardent Mills in Colton, California voted by a 2-1 margin to join Teamsters Local 166. The workers make and handle flour. The vote was 15-8 and there are 24 workers in the bargaining unit. “The workers are desperately seeking respect and fairness on the job and we will work hard to negotiate a contract that addresses their needs,” said Mike Bergen, Local 166 Secretary-Treasurer…

Flint Residents Demand State Do More As Snyder Releases His Budget  Think Progress  …Flint residents protested at the capitol as Gov. Rick Snyder (R) released this year’s budget proposal. In it was $195 million dedicated to the city’s needs. All of those funds would come on top of the $37.4 million that the legislature has already approved for Flint this year. House kills prevailing wage for public projects  Union Leader  …The House killed an attempt to require that workers receive the prevailing wage on all state construction projects. House Bill 1641 was killed on a vote of 181-138. Supporters argued the bill would put more money into the state’s economy and boost wages for local workers without increasing the cost of projects…

Right-to-work amendment fails in Alabama House  Montgomery Advertiser  …The Alabama House of Representatives on Thursday narrowly rejected a measure that would put the state’s right to work law in the state Constitution, a part of the House Republican caucus’ agenda. The chamber voted 60 to 24 for the measure. The constitutional amendment needed 63 affirmative votes to pass…

Senate re-approves paid sick leave, again  Times Argus  …Senate lawmakers once again approved a bill requiring employers to grant their workers paid sick leave. Wednesday afternoon, the Senate approved H.187, which will require all employers to offer three days of paid sick leave a year, beginning in 2018. “Tens of thousands of working Vermonters who have long lacked such basic protections as paid sick days eagerly await the bill being signed”…

UCSD researchers: Voter ID laws suppress Dems, minorities  San Diego Union-Tribune  …Researchers from the University of California San Diego have created a new statistical model indicating that voter identification laws do what detractors claim — reduce turnout for minorities and those on the political left. Overall, the researchers found, strict ID laws cause a reduction in Democratic turnout by 8.8 percentage points, compared to a reduction of 3.6 percentage points for Republicans…

NLRB v. Allegheny  Politico  …The metal maker Allegheny Technologies Inc. will fight vigorously an NLRB complaint, filed Thursday, that alleges its six-month lockout of 2,200 steelworkers is unlawful. The United Steelworkers union appeared to use the threat of an NLRB proceeding as a bargaining chip in recent months. It said in December that the agency would soon issue a complaint, but the two sides went through several unsuccessful bargaining sessions with federal mediators before the complaint was finally issued…
