San Bernardino Preschool Workers To Join Teamsters

Preschool teachers, aides, custodians and support staff working in the San Bernardino County Preschool Services Department will soon become members of Local 1932. The local union filed for recognition on behalf of the 503 workers on November 4 and San Bernardino County Human Resources recognized the Teamsters as having the majority on November 7.

“We look forward to having these dedicated school workers as part of Local 1932,” said Randy Korgan, General Manager/Secretary-Treasurer of Local 1932. “Our organizers have spent long hours with the workers to bring this unit, the largest public employee unit in the county not yet represented by the union, into our Teamster family.”

The Preschool Services Department’s jobs are spread out over 38 schools and the entire San Bernardino county, one of the largest in the state, which extends from Chino and Pomona all the way to 29 Palms and Barstow.

Toi Waddles, a preschool teacher at Fontana Citrus Head Start said, “My mom has been in a union since I was one year old. I grew up seeing the difference the union made in our lives. I have told my co-workers that being part of the Teamsters will change our lives for the better.”

“When we were able to collect over 290 signatures in support of Teamster representation, we knew the majority of the preschool services department workers were unified,” said Peter Sierra and L. Rommel Martinez, both organizers with Local 1932. “We were fortunate to have had the help, too, of Local 63, Joint Council 42 and many volunteer organizers.”

The preschool workers will become part of the Teamsters Public Services Division, which represents over 273,000 public employees across the country.
