BLET Fourth National Convention Begins

Delegates from nationwide divisions of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) began their Fourth National Convention today.   The convention featured several keynote speakers led by Jim Hoffa, Teamsters General President.

Dennis Pierce, National President of the BLET, opened the convention by praising the number of delegates which had traveled to Las Vegas for the important meeting.  Over 400 delegates representing over 32,000 members had convened to hear the reports on the current state of the union from its top officers.

Hoffa, who was introduced by Kevin Moore, Teamsters International Trustee, as the leader of the strongest union in North America, emphasized the importance of voting in the upcoming elections in November. “Teamsters in West Virginia fought back against being underpaid – they marched, they got the attention of the media and they won!  And, in Missouri, union members came together in solidarity and they fought back against the threat of “right to work”, and they won!  This is union power and everyone who believes in working families must vote this November.  We need change in Congress so that working families will have a good future. We and the BLET will not back down!”

Other presentors during the day included  Steve Bruno, BLET National Secretary-Treasurer, John Murphy, Director of the Teamsters Rail Conference, U.S. Congressman Tim Ryan, (D-OH) and Walter Barrows, labor member, U.S. Railroad Retirement Board.
