BMWED Strike At CP Rail Resolved  Teamster.org  ...BMWED members working on Canadian Pacific Rail in the Albany, NY, area went on strike earlier this week. But, by the same afternoon, the strike was resolved. Teamsters: National Express Shareholders Call for Review of Workplace Rights  Teamster.org  ...National Express investors are urging the company’s board to back a resolution seeking an independent review of employment practices in its U.S. school bus wholly-owned subsidiary, Durham School Services. The investors – including public sector union UNISON’s staff pension scheme, the SEIU Master Trust, the Teamsters Union and individual shareholders – have filed a shareholder resolution to address longstanding issues...

The campaign has now transformed into a nation-wide effort in order to turn up the heat on the company and its plan to shut down the profitable, award-winning brewery in Eden, N.C. In a press release announcing the campaign, Jim Hoffa, Teamsters General President said, “Shutting the Eden brewery will destroy more than 500 good jobs and devastate North Carolina families”...

Airgas Teamsters Overwhelmingly Ratify New Agreement  Local 710  ...Sixteen Teamsters Local 710 members at Airgas overwhelmingly ratified a new four-year agreement on Sunday, Feb. 28. All members will receive a $500 signing bonus in addition to the contract’s other strong provisions. With employer-paid coverage, Teamsters will save approximately $4,500 per year in individual health care contributions...

United Mechanics Press Airline's Shareholders  Labor Press  ... Teamster mechanics tasked with keeping United airplanes flying picketed outside a shareholders and investors meeting on Madison Avenue early this morning. The protest followed a multi-city job action held 10 days ago, in which angry mechanics turned out at airports around the nation to highlight their ongoing contract dispute with United's leadership...

Teamsters and Flexjet/Flight Options Clash Over Pilot Seniority  AINonline  ...The company accused the union of creating the seniority list “without any significant input from the pilot group,” arguing that “it does not reflect the interests of our workforce.” However, the IBT insists that the list was “unanimously agreed upon by the two autonomous committees of Flexjet and Flight Options pilots, representing the best interests of their respective pilot groups.” As negotiations over the CBA get under way, the two sides appear far apart...

House members voted 91-8 in favor of legislation that would mandate a drug test for any applicant to Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) who exhibited “reasonable suspicion” of drug use as determined by a caseworker, including drug-related convictions in the past three years...

Study sees positive impact of raising New York’s minimum wage to $15 an hour  UC Berkley  ...A proposed gradual increase in New York’s minimum wage from $9 to $15 an hour would increase wages by an average of 23 percent for nearly 3.2 million workers by mid- 2021 and will not have a negative effect on overall employment, says a comprehensive new study. Gov. Andrew Cuomo is seeking legislative support to increase the state’s minimum wage to $15 an hour by Dec. 31, 2018 in New York City, and by July 1, 2021 in the rest of the state...

UAW Local 1714 production workers vote on local GM contract  WFMJ  ...Some autoworkers at the General Motors Fabrication Plant will are voting again on a previously rejected proposed tentative agreement covering local contract issues. A majority of the members of UAW Local 1714 voted in favor of the proposed pact last month. Local union President Robert Morales tells 21 News that his membership is divided into two groups; Skilled Trades workers and Production workers...

Local SEIU ratifies Sonoma County contract with pay hikes, benefits  Press Democrat  ...Sonoma County’s largest labor union has ratified a tentative contract with the county, a deal reached after months of tense negotiations that is expected to grant 2,200 rank-and-file government workers their most substantial pay and benefits increases in more than eight years. Officials with the Service Employees’ International Union Local 1021 said 99.03 percent of the 1,140 union members who cast ballots voted in favor of the deal, reached Feb. 20...

Janitors and security guards are paid 20% less when they're contractors, report says  LA Times  ...A boom in companies trying to cut costs by contracting out janitorial and security jobs has led to large pay disparities between workers doing the same jobs, according to a UC Berkeley report. Janitors who work for California contractors earn on average $10.31 an hour, or 20% less than janitors who work directly for a company that uses their services...
