Costco Teamsters in the East Join Western Conference Pension Plan for First Time  Teamster.org  ...Teamsters who work at Costco in New York, New Jersey and Maryland have overwhelmingly ratified an agreement under which they will be covered by the Western Conference of Teamsters pension plan. The Western Conference is the largest Taft-Hartley defined-benefit pension plan in the nation. The 4,000 Costco Teamsters in the East now join the 12,000 Costco Teamsters in California as members of this defined-benefit plan...

Allegiant Air reaches tentative contract with its pilots  Business Journal  ...Allegiant Air and its pilots union have announced a tentative contract agreement, bringing years of protracted labor negotiations closer to a final accord. Las Vegas-based Allegiant and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, representing Allegiant Air pilots, announced the tentative contract Wednesday morning. It still has to be voted on and ratified by Allegiant Air pilots...

Chicago Teachers Organize in Support of Mexican Colleagues After Violent Clashes in Oaxaca  In These Times  ...Chicago teachers and activists protested in front of the Mexican Consulate Wednesday morning to show their solidarity with the Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación (CNTE) and teachers in Oaxaca, Mexico, after attacks by police on protesters left at least eight dead and more than 100 injured Sunday...

Indefinite strike in Taiwan by China Airlines workers  India Live Today  ...More than 2,600 workers belonging to the Flight Attendants Union decided to go on strike after their workplace was transferred from Songshan Airport located in Taipei to Taoyuan, about 50 km outside the city. China Airlines new president Ho Nuan-Hsuan, who begins his tenure on Friday, said the company is looking for a quick resolution to the conflict and is willing to talk with employees...

ScotRail talks offer amid strike dismissed as 'stunt'  BBC  ...An offer by ScotRail to hold fresh talks with union leaders as a series of one-day strikes continues has been dismissed as a "stunt". The train operator said its proposal was not directly related to the current industrial action - but it wanted to restart discussions on Monday. RMT general secretary Mick Cash said the latest "stunt" was "classic divide and rule"...

'TTIP on steroids': Campaigners warn post-Brexit UK faces 'disastrous' trade deal with US  Independent  ...Campaigners against the controversial TTIP trade deal with the US fear the UK will negotiate an “even more disastrous” agreement after it leaves the European Union. TTIP has provoked opposition across Europe with concerns it will open up public sector organisations – such as the NHS – to privatisation...

On TPP, Hillary Clinton Isn’t Tacking Right For The General Election  Huffington Post  ...So far, Clinton isn’t budging on her TPP opposition. Barney Frank, a top Clinton surrogate blasted calls for Congress to pursue a vote on TPP during the lame-duck session following the November elections. Although the White House has been eager for such a move, the rumor on Capitol Hill is that support for the pact has fallen through the floor since last year...

New Jersey passes $15 minimum wage but Gov. Christie may veto  CNN  ...The New Jersey Senate passed a bill Thursday that would gradually raise the state minimum wage to $15 an hour. Currently it's $8.38. The measure has already been approved by the state Assembly, so the next stop is Gov. Chris Christie's desk. The expectation, however, is that Christie will veto it... 

Maryland's minimum wage to rise again July 1  Herald Mail  ...When the new fiscal year begins July 1, Maryland's minimum wage will once again increase by 50 cents, up to $8.75 per hour. Authorized by legislation under former Gov. Martin O'Malley, the state's wage hike has been gradual, increasing from the federal rate of $7.25 to $8, and then to $8.25 last July...

Federal appellate court questions 2013 voter ID law  The Chronicle  ...While a federal judge in Winston-Salem last April decided that that there was nothing about North Carolina’s 2013 voter ID law that should keep African-Americans or others from lawfully casting their ballots, a three-judge federal panel Tuesday wasn’t so sure. Attorneys for the N.C. NAACP “… feel very good about our case and the evidence which we presented”...

Report: Ohio gains 7,400 construction jobs  Business Journal  ...As part of Ohio’s revved-up economy, the state saw a rise in construction jobs in May, compared to the same time last year. That’s the verdict from the Associated General Contractors of America. It reports the Buckeye State went from 200,000 construction jobs in May of 2015 to 207,400 this past May...

Almost 750,000 California seniors still working after age 65  SacBee  ...Retirement isn't coming easy for California baby boomers. More than 740,000 California residents between ages 65 and 74 are employed or looking for work, roughly double the number from 15 years ago, according to a Sacramento Bee review of the latest census data. Much of that growth reflects a swell of baby boomers entering retirement age...

Chicago Lawmakers Unanimously Vote To Guarantee Workers A Paid Day Off If They Get Sick  Think Progress  ...On Wednesday, the Chicago city council unanimously passed a paid sick leave bill that will mandate that most employers offer five paid days off a year for illness. The new law will mean more than 460,000 city residents who previously lacked a paid day off if they or their family members fell sick will get paid leave...

NJ Transit gives rail unions deadline to agree to new negotiations  North Jersey  ...NJ Transit is giving its two largest rail employee unions a deadline of June 24 to agree to a new round of negotiations before a federal mediator, or else the agency will begin preparations for a strike or labor lockout. A union leader said on Tuesday that NJ Transit and the unions already are negotiating directly, without the federal board’s help...

UAW threatens strike against auto supplier Sakthi  Michigan Radio  ...The United Auto Workers is threatening a strike at Sakthi Automotive Group. The India-based auto parts supplier has more than 200 employees at two Detroit facilities. It makes safety components for automakers including GM and Ford. The UAW says Sakthi has engaged in a number of unfair labor practices at its Detroit plants, starting prior to the union organizing workers there in 2015...

Thousands of Nurses to Strike This Week in Minnesota, California and Massachusetts  AFLCIO  ...Starting this week, nearly 10,000 registered nurses, affiliated with NNU, are striking in Minnesota, California and Massachusetts in order to improve patient safety and quality care at the hospitals where they work. The nurses are taking a stand on behalf of their patients at hospitals in the three states owned by various corporations that are raising serious questions about their commitment to patients...

Brigham, nurses in last-ditch effort to avoid strike  Boston Globe  ...Brigham and Women’s Hospital and its nurses union will make a last-ditch effort to avoid a strike. Both sides have agreed to meet for another round of contract negotiations Friday. Without a deal, the nurses union says it will stage a one-day strike on Monday, and the hospital says it will lock them out for another four days while using temporary workers...

VA Employees Hold Dozens of Rallies Across the Country to Protest Proposed Closing of Veterans Hospitals  NH Labor News  ...Veterans Affairs employees are holding dozens of rallies outside VA hospitals this week and next to protest plans to privatize veterans’ health care and shut down VA hospitals and medical centers. The rallies are being organized by the American Federation of Government Employees, which represents 230,000 VA doctors, nurses, psychologists, benefits specialists, and other workers across the country...

Baltimore Cop Found Not Guilty on All Charges in Freddie Gray Case  Common Dreams  ...A third trial for a Baltimore police officer for their role in the death of Freddie Gray still hasn't returned a conviction, with Officer Caesar Goodson being acquitted of all charges on Thursday. Prosecutors had charged that Goodson, who drove the van in which Gray suffered his fatal spinal cord injury, purposefully gave Gray a "rough ride," ultimately leading to his death.
