UNFI Drivers in Hudson Valley Join Teamsters Union  Teamster.org  ...Drivers at America’s largest organic and natural food supplier United Natural Foods, Inc. (UNFI) have voted to join Teamsters Local 445, the union announced yesterday. The 100 drivers distribute food from the company’s Montgomery, N.Y. facility to Whole Foods and other organic, natural and specialty food stores in the New York metropolitan area. They voted to form a union at UNFI in order to ensure fair pay, equitable treatment on the job, and the ability to provide a good life for themselves and their families...

Pepsi Membership Ratifies New Four-Year Contract  Local 727  ...Pepsi members voted by a 3-to-2 margin to ratify the company’s revised four-year contract offer, which includes retroactive wage increases, merged language, improved health care and more stringent job protections for over 600 workers at four Pepsi facilities in Chicago, Elk Grove Village and Kankakee. “This is the strongest contract this Pepsi membership has ever had, and it merges together four agreements to unite the group under one contract,” said John T. Coli, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 727...

"The strike we started on July 4 is indefinite; disregard the call by the government to resume work on Monday, July 11," leaders of the workers unions said in a statement issued on Sunday in Lafia...

Canada Post drops threat to lock out workers  CBC  ...Mail kept moving Monday as Canada Post and the union representing 50,000 of its workers resumed contract talks and the post office withdrew a threat to lock out its workers. Canada Post issued a brief statement that said it had withdrawn its lockout notice "which will allow both parties to focus their efforts on serious negotiations"...

S.Africa: Commuters stranded as bus drivers remain on strike  BDLive  ...Thousands of Johannesburg commuters had to seek alternate transport again on Tuesday as attempts to negotiate an end to the Metrobus drivers strike failed. The drivers have vowed to intensify their unprotected strike if the decision to outsource bus inspectors is not reversed. This is according to a bus driver who has been working for the bus service for more than 10 years...

TTIP has 'no chance under Obama'  The Telegraph  ...France has declared that there is “no chance” of the EU-US trade deal being signed before President Obama leaves office, throwing the pact into serious doubt. Matthias Fekl, a French trade minister, said that it is “impossible” for the vast deal to be concluded this year. USW: Europtec Illegally Locks Out Steelworkers in Clarksburg  PR Newswire  ...The United Steelworkers (USW) today said that Europtec USA, Inc. illegally locked out 28 members of Local 567 at the company's glass processing facility in Clarksburg this morning. The union further said that it has already filed charges today with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) alleging the lockout to be illegal. USW District 8 Director Billy Thompson called on the company to end its illegal lockout immediately...

End of an era: Chicago's last Oreo line shut down Friday  Chicago Tribune  ...The final Chicago-made Oreo cookies rolled off the line Friday, ending the iconic cookie's decades-long run of delighting hometown consumers and providing good-paying union jobs on the Southwest Side. The shutdown of the Oreo lines is part of Mondelez International's plan to shift some of its production to Mexico. Last summer the company said it would be laying off about half of the Chicago bakery's 1,200 workers; many of them are already gone...
