Hoffa: Feds Take a Stand for Motorists in Protecting Rest Breaks  Teamster.org  ...Teamsters General President James P. Hoffa on the recent Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) decision to reject a petition that sought to rescind the current 30-minute rest break required under Hours of Service rules instituted in 2013: “The Teamsters applaud the FMCSA’s ruling to keep in place this essential rest break for hard-working truckers nationwide"...

Herrera: Heroes Come Into Our Neighborhood Every Day, We Just Don’t See Them  Voice of OC  ...In Orange County waste workers earn roughly $38,000 a year, far below the poverty line for a head of household. It is time these hard working heroes should have their hard work rewarded. Wages for waste workers must become commensurate with the valuable services they deliver. In the next several months Teamsters Local 396 will be negotiating wages and working conditions for thousands of waste workers...

Teamsters decline city proposal for public negotiations  The Spectrum  ...The City of Mesquite and Teamsters Local 14 won't be negotiating their differences in public again. During a testy Mesquite City Council meeting on Aug. 23, Grant Davis, vice president and director of operations for Teamsters Local 14 — the union representing Mesquite’s city workers — used the public comment portion of the meeting to discuss negotiations between the city and the union regarding a pay raise for city employees...

Teamsters, Fall River officials return to mediation table  The Herald News  ...The administration and the union representing former city sanitation workers were in Boston again this week before the state Department of Labor Relations for an informal hearing on a second complaint against the city. David Robbins, the Teamsters Local 251 contract coordinator and spokesman for the union, confirmed an informal hearing was conducted on Wednesday regarding a charge that the city violated labor law when the city unilaterally changed conditions of the sanitation workers contract...

Passion for labor runs deep for Teamsters leader  Buffalo News  ...George Harrigan joined the Teamsters when he took a part-time job unloading UPS trucks in the late 1970s. Harrigan, 58, is now president of Teamsters Joint Council 46, which extends to Rochester. And on Monday, carried out a special honor, as grand marshal of the AFL-CIO Labor Day Parade in South Buffalo...

Schnucks retaliates against Teamsters again; banishes Girl Scouts, others from selling at their stores  Labor Tribune  ...In yet another act of retaliation against Teamsters Local 688 for their audacity to boycott them, Schnucks has announced it will no longer allow the Boys Scouts, Girl Scouts and Salvation Army, among many others, to solicit in front of their stores. In what has to be one of the worst public relations gaffes of all time, the decision was made to thwart efforts by Local 688 to stand in front of their stores to advertise their boycott...

Workers at small Codelco copper mine to strike this week  Reuters  ...Workers at Codelco's small Salvador deposit will go on strike this week after failing to reach agreement in contract talks with the Chilean state-owned company, the union told Reuters on Thursday. The strike is set to start on Monday after workers rejected Codelco's latest offer and the company said it had opted not to request a five-day mediation process...

Canadian Auto Workers Pick General Motors as Strike Target  ABC  ...Canadian auto workers have picked General Motors Co. as a potential strike target in contract talks with the Detroit Three automakers. The union's contract with GM, Ford Motor Co. and Fiat Chrysler expires at 11:59 p.m. EDT on Sept. 19. Talks so far have been contentious, especially with GM. The company wants a contract that's more cost-competitive with the United Auto Workers union in the U.S... 

Desperate EU keeps negotiating doomed TTIP trade deal with America despite huge criticism  Express  ...The European Commission has kept negotiating the controversial planned Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) even though it has been plagued by criticism. The agreement seeks to establish a free trade zone between the United States and Europe and has drawn severe criticism for the lack of transparency in the negotiations. However, the EU chief commissioner Jean-Claude Juncker, has said defiantly: “We will continue negotiations”...

Obama seeks to convince Asian partners that Washington will approve TPP  Reuters  ...U.S. President Barack Obama said on Monday that U.S. trading partners in Asia did not need to be persuaded of the benefits of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, just that Washington would eventually approve the trade pact. Obama has made the 12-nation TPP the centerpiece of a diplomatic "pivot" to Asia, but the prospects for U.S. congressional approval have looked increasingly dim... 

Obama on Trans-Pacific trade deal: 'I remain confident that we can get TPP passed'  LA Times  ...President Obama expressed fresh optimism Sunday that his sweeping trade pact with Pacific Rim nations would still be approved by Congress, despite widespread political opposition that has left the 12-nation deal all but dead. Both Democrats and Republicans have soured on the Trans-Pacific Partnership as overseas trade has emerged as a campaign trail scapegoat for all that remains wrong in the shifting U.S. economy...

TPP deal still a possibility, PM Key says  Scoop  ...Prime Minister John Key still sees a completed Trans Pacific Partnership agreement as a possibility, though he isn't confident it will get over the line. Key will talk to US President Barack Obama when they meet in Laos at the East Asia Summit later this week, and expects TPP will come up, he told reporters at his post-Cabinet press conference in Wellington. The far-ranging trade and investment deal has been losing traction with policy makers in the US...

Fire Kills Migrant Workers in Russia  Solidarity Center  ...The search for a better future and the means to support their families in Kyrgyzstan ended tragically for 14 migrant workers Saturday, August 27, in Moscow, when their printing plant caught fire. All of the victims were young women, including two 17-year-old girls, according to reports. Three Russian workers also died. Burials for the workers were held August 31, in towns around Kyrgyzstan...

Tunisia: Abassi: Austerity Measures Should Not Impact on the Poor People Who are Already at a Baseline  Arab Trade Union  ...The General Secretary of the Tunisian trade union confederation Husain Abassi said that the government should look for other solutions to save the crippled Tunisian economy, rather than resorting to austerity measures that only impact workers and the poor and public institutions...

North Carolina May End Up Back In Court Over Its Foot Dragging On Early Voting  TPM  ...After a costly legal battle that has ricocheted all the way up to the Supreme Court, North Carolina may end up in court yet again over GOP officials' ongoing efforts to restrict access to the ballot box -- particularly for minority voters. The latest round of brass knuckles politics and legal maneuvering comes in the midst of a larger battle over a regimen of voting restrictions considered to be among the harshest in the nation...

In one map, here are the states that will vote on the minimum wage in November  Policy Mic  ...Several states could give millions of Americans a pay raise if minimum wage increases across the country are approved by voters this fall. The state-level wage fight is a symptom of disagreement in Washington about whether low-income Americans should be paid more. Twenty-nine states and the District of Columbia already have minimum wages above the federal standard of $7.25...

Report: Nearly two-thirds of Florida workers earn less than state average  Sun Sentinel  ...The bulk of Florida workers, 65 percent, make below the state average annual salary of just over $39,000, according to the annual “State of Working Florida” report produced by Florida International University. A summary of the Labor Day report, by FIU’s Center for Labor Research and Studies, was released Thursday. Florida’s minimum wage is $8.05 an hour, unchanged in 2016 from a year ago...

MetroNews West Virginia Poll: Justice has double-digit lead over Cole  WSAZ  ...Greenbrier Resort owner Jim Justice has a double-digit lead over state Senate President Bill Cole in the race for governor, according to our media partner, MetroNews West Virginia Poll released Friday. Justice, the Democratic nominee, was favored by 46 percent of those who took part in the poll while the Republican nominee, Cole, received 32 percent...

Nurses Hit Picket Line After Talks With Allina Health Fail  CBS  ...Thousands of nurses are walking the picket line after failing to reach an agreement with Allina Health. The nurses went on strike at 7 a.m. Monday. Within minutes, Allina had replacement nurses working with patients at all five hospitals impacted by the strike. The Minnesota Nurses Association says the key issues include health insurance, workplace safety and staffing levels...

MBTA janitors bring labor issue to the feds   Boston.com  ...The union representing janitors who clean the MBTA’s transit stations filed federal complaints with the National Labor Relations Board, arguing the two private companies who hold the T’s cleaning contracts did not properly negotiate with their workers. The filings came midday Thursday, the day the 32BJ SEIU says the companies will lay off dozens of the cleaning workers they represent...

Job Growth Stays Steady While Wage Growth Fails To Take Off  Think Progress  ...The economy added 151,000 jobs in August while the unemployment rate stayed unchanged at 4.9 percent, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Analysts had expected 180,000 jobs to be added. June was revised down from an original 292,000 to 271,000, while July was revised up from 255,000 to 275,000, meaning there were a net 1,000 fewer jobs than originally reported...

One secret of Trump's low-cost campaign: free labor  Reuters  ...Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has run an unusually cheap campaign in part by not paying at least 10 top staffers, consultants and advisers, some of whom are no longer with the campaign, according to a review of federal campaign finance filings. The New York real estate magnate and his allies have touted his campaign's frugality, saying it is evidence of his management skills. But not compensating top people in a presidential campaign is a departure from campaign finance norms...

White House considers ending for-profit immigrant detainee centers but critics say it could add billions to the cost  LA Times  ...The Obama administration is considering an end to the practice of keeping immigrant detainees in for-profit centers, weeks after the Federal Bureau of Prisons announced it would stop its use of private prisons. Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, whose agency includes the immigration service and the Border Patrol, in late August ordered a review of ways to end the use of the private facilities...

Is an Arkansas Town Operating a "Hot Check" Court as an Illegal Debtors' Prison?  Democracy Now  ...A woman in Sherwood, Arkansas, just spent 35 days in a county jail after she accidentally bounced a $29 check five years ago. Nikki Petree was sentenced to jail last month by a judge accused of running a debtors’ prison. She had already been arrested at least seven times over the bounced check and paid at least $600 in court fines... 

Poll: Support for Black Lives Matter grows among white youth  CBS  ...Support for the Black Lives Matter movement has increased among young white adults, according to a poll that suggests a majority of white, black, Asian and Hispanic young adults now support the movement calling for accountability for police in the deaths of African-Americans. Fifty-one percent of white adults between the ages of 18 and 30 say in a GenForward poll they now strongly or somewhat support Black Lives Matter...

Democrats are embracing Black Lives Matter. But a leaked memo puts their motivations into question.  Vox  ...Following major demonstrations by Black Lives Matter activists during the primary season, which included disrupting Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Gov.
