STATE & LIVING WAGE BATTLES

Washington: polling finds strong support for minimum-wage increase  Heraldnet  ...Initiative 1433 has a simple pitch: Give Washington’s lowest-paid workers higher wages and paid sick leave. Ohio: In Key Swing State, Thousands of Voters' Rights Restored With Weeks to Go  Common Dreams  ...An Ohio judge on Wednesday night restored thousands of voters' rights, in a decision praised as a victory—"albeit a partial one"—for the scores that had been illegally purged from the state's rolls. Why Civil Rights Groups Are Still Fighting Voting Rights  Truthout  ...When civil rights groups learned that a county elections board planned to relocate the polling station for a predominately Black precinct in Macon, Georgia to a local sheriff's office, they warned election officials that the move would unfairly discourage turnout. Volunteers collected signatures from 40 percent of the voters in the precinct. Georgia law requires signatures from 20 percent of a precinct to petition an election board...

Louisiana lawmaker’s attempt to prevent immigrants from marrying is affecting U.S. citizens, too  Think Progress  ...State Rep. Valerie Hodges (R-LA), the sponsor of the legislation, said in January that the law would prevent undocumented immigrants from marrying solely to get immigration benefits and would help prevent terrorists from getting green cards and citizenship. Immigrant advocates say Lousiana’s law is unnecessary because there isn’t much evidence that this type of marriage fraud is in fact occurring.

Donald Trump’s charge on the election’s integrity reverberates in both campaigns  Washington Post  ...Donald Trump’s defiant assault on the election’s integrity reverberated Thursday among his allies and rivals as the GOP campaign and Hillary Clinton’s inner circle argued over how best to face the outcome after the votes are counted. Trump on Wednesday amplified one of the most explosive charges of his candidacy: that if he loses the election, he might consider the results illegitimate because the process is “rigged”...

Donald Trump is no Al Gore  Think Progress  ...The most consequential moment of the last presidential debate occurred when Republican nominee Donald Trump suggested he may reject the results of the November 8 election if he loses. Trump’s surrogates quickly settled on a talking point to normalize Trump’s remark — what Trump’s saying is really no different than what Al Gore did in 2000. But the comparison doesn’t hold up. What Our Sons Are Learning From Donald Trump  (opinion) New York Times  ...Throughout his campaign, Donald J. Trump has displayed a particular type of hyper masculinity — the man who is proud not to apologize and to have never changed a diaper; who views “loser” as the ultimate insult; who bonds with other men by objectifying women. It’s especially striking because today’s schools and workplaces try to value something different...

The United States' War on Youth: From Schools to Debtors' Prisons  (opinion) Truthout  ...If one important measure of a democracy is how a society treats its children, especially poor youth of color, there can be little doubt that American society is failing.
