Stike Authorization Vote at GP Gypsum is Unanimous  Local 117  ...Teamsters at GP Gypsum have voted unanimously to authorize a strike. The vote took place at three meetings last week at the IBEW hall in Tacoma. The result of the vote was 71-0; over 90 percent of the bargaining unit participated. “Our members are ready to take action to defend their livelihoods,” said John Scearcy, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 117...

Union leaders ask Obama to reconsider DAPL decision  WSAU  ...The presidents of five major labor unions are asking President Obama to allow construction to resume on the Dakota Access Pipeline. The union leaders say the project's delays are putting union members out of work and causing hardships for thousands of families. The letter is signed by Teamsters President James Hoffa and the leaders of other unions representing pipefitters, engineers, electrical workers and others...

FedEx Freight Teamsters Confront CEO Fred Smith  Teamster.org  ...FedEx Freight Teamsters from Charlotte, N.C.; Philadelphia; South Brunswick, N.J.; and Stockton, Calif. attended the FedEx shareholders meeting on Sept. 26, 2016, where they confronted CEO Fred Smith about the lousy health care benefits, poor retirement security and the company’s anti-worker, anti-union tactics. Workers attended on behalf of their co-workers who have voted to become Teamsters and the thousands of others who are fighting for a strong voice and respect on the job...

Brazil: Petrobras' Offer Rejected by Oil Workers, Strike Likely  Zacks  ...Brazilian state-run energy giant, Petroleo Brasileiro S.A. or Petrobras saw its shares decline 2.4% on Sep 29, 2016, after the country’s largest oil workers' federation rejected its contract offer and began preparing for a strike. Petrobras offered a 4.97% increment in wage to the Federal Union Party. However, the company planned to cut overtime payments and regular work shifts. The union found this offer to be unacceptable...

Labor Dept.: Steps Made in Fight against Child Labor  Solidarity Center  ...More than 80 countries have demonstrated they are “upholding their commitments to abolish forced labor and the worst forms of child labor,” according to U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez, in the Findings on the Worst Forms of Child Labor report released today. Montana's minimum wage increasing to $8.15 for 2017   NBC  ...Montanans earning minimum wage will see the rate increase to $8.15 per hour beginning January 1, 2017. An estimated 3,323 workers, or approximately 1.2 percent of the workforce, receive minimum wage. “By tying our minimum wage to the Consumer Price Index (CPI-U), we are making sure that Montana families are keeping pace with inflation"...

Chair of Labor Committee Plans to File Right-To-Work Legislation  OzarksFirst  ...A key Missouri lawmaker plans to file right-to-work legislation in January. State Representative Holly Rehder (R-Sikeston) plans to file the bill in January. If Attorney General Chris Koster (D) wins the Governor’s race, Rehder will try to bypass Koster and have the measure placed on the statewide ballot. While 60 percent of Missourians voted against right-to-work in 1978, Rehder says things are different now...

Allina nurses reject contract, remain on strike  Star Tribune  ...Allina Health hospital nurses voted Monday night to reject a contract offer from their employer, increasing the likelihood that their walkout over health benefits, staffing and safety concerns will go down as the longest nursing strike in Minnesota history. While the Minnesota Nurses Association had not recommended a “no” vote, many nurses said they felt Allina’s latest offer was too similar to one they rejected in August...

Union representing janitors averts strike  Boston Globe  ...A janitors strike that would have hit several thousand office buildings in the Boston area was averted late Friday when their union reached a settlement with the region’s cleaning companies. The contract must be ratified by a vote from the janitors, who are members of the 32BJ of the Service Employees International Union. A vote is scheduled for next week...
