Plumbers, carpenters, electricians at UCLA strike for higher wages and back pay  LA Times  ...Several hundred skilled-trade workers at UCLA walked out and picketed for higher wages and retroactive pay on Wednesday. SFO's laid off Hertz workers now calling for boycott  FOX  ...Workers recently laid off by Hertz Car Rental's site near San Francisco International Airport are now calling for a boycott. The 156 people laid off, called "shuttlers", are the workers who move the vehicles in the lots. They've received support from the Chinese Progressive Association, which helps immigrant workers. The nonprofit, the Board of Supervisors and Teamsters Local 856 say they've reached out to Hertz, but have not been able to get company officials to come to the table to talk...

Turkey: Fired for wanting to form a union  IndustriALL  ...Seven workers were dismissed on 13 November after trying to form a union at Günsan Elektrik, owned by Schneider Electric, in Turkey. After organizing members at Günsan Elektrik plant, the union applied to the Turkish Ministry of Labour for what is called a Majority Certificate in order to form a workplace union. Management’s response when they found out was to unceremoniously sack seven of the workers leading the organizing efforts...

Missouri's minimum wage to increase  Press Now  ...Missouri's minimum wage will rise by a nickel when the new year begins. The state labor department said the minimum wage will rise from $7.65 an hour to $7.70 an hour, effective Jan. 1. The increase is the result of a law approved by voters 10 year ago. That measure set Missouri's minimum wage at $6.50 an hour in 2007, with an annual cost-of-living adjustment if necessary...

Proposition 206, the voter-approved initiative, requires nearly all employers to provide paid sick time. Depending on the employer’s size, each worker, whether full time, part time or temporary, will be able to earn up to 24 or 40 hours per year...

Giant, Safeway Reach Agreements With Union, Likely Averting Strike  WBAL  ...Giant Food and Safeway union workers voted Wednesday on a new contract, likely averting a strike. An impasse with Giant nearly caused a work stoppage by United Food and Commercial Workers locals 400 and 27. Safeway had reached a tentative agreement with the union. Officials with Landover-based Giant confirmed Wednesday in a statement they've reached a tentative agreement...

SEIU Local 1000 union members authorize strike over labor contract  SacBee  ...California state government’s biggest union won a mandate from its members to strike if SEIU Local 1000 can’t reach an agreement on a new contract, the union announced Tuesday. The union said 92 percent of members who voted cast a ballot to authorize the strike...

RTA workers authorize strike  Dayton Daily News  ...Members of the union representing Greater Dayton RTA bus drivers have authorized a strike after rejecting management’s third contract proposal. Workers represented by the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1385 on Sunday overwhelmingly voted in favor of a work stoppage, one day after they rejected the agency’s most recent contract offer, union officials said...

NYC transit workers warn of January strike as they seek better pay and pensions  Daily News  ...No contract, no transit. That was the message from union officials who rallied more than 1,000 transit workers outside MTA headquarters to support pay raises and changes to pension contributions. State labor board declares impasse between AFSCME, Rauner  Chicago Sun Times  ...In a win for Gov. Bruce Rauner, the state’s labor relations board on Tuesday declared an impasse between AFSCME and his administration — essentially narrowing the union’s options to authorizing a strike or accepting the Rauner administration’s contract offer. The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 31 immediately vowed to appeal the verbal ruling...
