Texas: Americans who live near border say Trump's wall is unwelcome  My SA  ...The people who live in the bustling, fertile Rio Grande Valley, where the U.S. border meets the Gulf of Mexico, think a "virtual wall" of surveillance technology makes a lot more sense. It's already in wide use and expanding. Erecting a 40-foot concrete barrier across the entire 1,954-mile frontier with Mexico, as Trump promised during the presidential campaign, collides head-on with multiple realities...

Wide support across party lines for raising minimum wage  Boston Globe  ...Even if the effort to raise the federal minimum wage isn’t dead, it appears to be on “semi-permanent intensive care,” said Lew Finfer, cochairman of Raise Up Massachusetts, the community coalition that led the successful effort to raise the state’s minimum wage. Yet support for higher wages cuts across party lines. Working class voters who feel left behind by the economy turned out in droves for Trump, in hopes that his policies could improve their financial situations...

SEIU Local 1000’s proposed one-day strike  SacBee  ...If history is a guide, the one-day strike that SEIU Local 1000 just announced for Dec. 5 will not happen. While state employee unions periodically authorize walkouts, including Local 1000 in 2009, none has actually taken place. That gives the Brown administration a week to wrap up contract negotiations with California’s largest public sector union, which represents about 95,000 workers in nine of its 21 bargaining units...

What Unions Got Wrong About Trump  New York Times  ...In a further indication that union leaders were not on the same wavelength as the working-class whites who tipped the election to Mr. Trump, Mrs. Clinton lost among union households in Ohio, 49 percent to 44 percent.
