Belle Fourche police seek to unionize  Rapid City Journal ...Belle Fourche police have filed a petition with the South Dakota Department of Labor to have the Teamsters union represent them in discussions with city government, Mayor Gloria Landphere said Monday. James Heeren, business agent for the Teamsters in South Dakota, based in Sioux Falls, said Monday that he had filed the petition for recognition of the union on behalf of "100 percent of the currently employed officers"...

Ball Corp. union leader hopes town might help keep plant open  Greensboro.com  ...Ball Corp. executives “would be interested in anything we could put together” in terms of economic incentives for keeping its Reidsville can-packaging plant open, said Vernon Gammon, secretary-treasurer of the Local Teamsters 391.  Ball announced Monday evening that its 450,000-square-foot plant will cease operating by mid 2017, eliminating 120 hourly and 30 salaried jobs...

Eiffel Tower Closed During Worker Strike  RTT News  ...Paris' famous landmark Eiffel Tower was closed on Tuesday due to a strike by workers over salaries and working conditions, leaving thousands of visitors disappointed. Greece, IMF spar over austerity and forecasting  SF Gate  ...The Greek government and the International Monetary Fund squabbled Tuesday over further reforms the debt-hobbled country is being asked to make as part of its bailout. Mesnard considering lawsuit to block minimum wage increase  ABC  ...The incoming speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives said Monday he is considering whether to file a lawsuit to block an increase to the minimum wage approved by voters last month. Rep. J.D. Mesnard said the increase might run afoul of the state Constitution's requirement that initiatives contain a funding source if they require state outlays...

Federal Appeals Court Upholds Virginia Voter ID Law  ABC  ...A federal appeals court on Tuesday upheld a Virginia law requiring voters to show photo identification at the polls, rejecting a challenge from Democrats who argued that it suppresses voting by minorities and young people. A three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the law does not violate the Voting Rights Act or impose an unconstitutional burden on the right to vote...

Missouri labor union leader seeks to ban right-to-work laws  Kansas City Star  ...A Missouri labor union leader is proposing to take the battle over so-called right-to-work laws to a vote of the people. Missouri AFL-CIO President Mike Louis has filed several versions of an initiative petition with the secretary of state's office that would ask voters to amend the constitution to ensure union negotiating rights...

Minimum-wage raises ahead next month; in Seattle, $15 for some  Seattle Times  ...Washington state’s minimum wage, eanwhile, rises 16 percent from the current $9.47 an hour to $11 starting Jan. 1, thanks to Initiative 1433. That measure, which voters statewide approved in November, is to raise the minimum wage over four years to $13.50 by 2020. The statewide law does not differentiate between large and small employers... 

Strike, Little Rock city workers advised  Arkansas Online  ...Little Rock City Director Erma Hendrix encouraged low-wage, nonuniformed city employees on Tuesday to go on strike until officials pay them a living wage. Hendrix's suggestion came up during budget discussions Tuesday, when the board approved the 2017 budget in an 8-1 vote...

California state workers' SEIU contract includes 9 to 19 percent raises  SacBee  ...A proposed contract for state government’s largest union includes dozens of special pay raises for certain workers that could increase their salaries by as much as 19 percent next year, according to new details released this week by the bargaining units. The biggest gains would go to financial experts working for departments like CalPERS, as well as workers with specialized training in competitive career fields...

AFL-CIO asks to intervene in challenge to overtime rule  Reuters  ...The Texas chapter of the AFL-CIO is asking to join the battle over the legality of an Obama administration rule that would extend mandatory overtime pay to 4.2 million workers, raising concerns that the U.S. Department of Labor will drop its defense of the rule once President-elect Donald Trump takes office...

Nurses union at Indiana Regional Medical Center reaches tentative deal  Trib Live  ...Nurses at Indiana Regional Medical Center agreed to a tentative labor contract, averting a planned 17-hour strike by the 384-member union on Dec. 23. Members of the Indiana Registered Nurses Association are to vote Thursday to ratify the agreement...

NLRB supports workers in long struggle for contract at Mayo Clinic  Workday Minnesota  ...The general counsel for the National Labor Relations Board has determined that unfair labor practice charges filed against Mayo Clinic have merit, supporting maintenance workers at the Albert Lea Medical Center who have been seeking a contract for more than 18 months. On Monday, the NLRB General Counsel found that Mayo has "failed to bargain in good faith" with SEIU Healthcare Minnesota...

Hundreds of workers go on strike at Reagan National and Dulles  WTOP  ...Hundreds of contracted airport service workers walked off the job Wednesday morning at Dulles International and Reagan National airports, speaking out against their employer and demanding to be paid a minimum of $15 an hour. “They’re on strike today to demand higher standards,” said protest organizer Jaime Contreras, vice president of Service Employees International Union Local 32BJ...

Most Americans Support Paid Leave for Workers, Poll Finds  Wall Street Journal  ...After an acrimonious election season that divided families and friends, it appears that Americans can at least agree on one issue: paid leave for workers. In a poll conducted around the time of the election, 82% of voters said they believe it is important or very important for Congress and the next president to consider legislation for paid sick days as well as paid family and medical leave...

Republican looks to overhaul Social Security  AP  ...A key Republican lawmaker wants to overhaul Social Security, the decades-old program that provides benefits to some 60 million retirees and disabled, with a plan to gradually increase the retirement age and slow the growth of benefits for higher-income workers. Sam Johnson of Texas, the chairman of the House Ways and Means subcommittee on Social Security, introduced legislation just before the end of the congressional session last week that he said would "permanently save" the program...

Referring to FBI figures which showed a rise of anti-Muslim hate crimes between 2014 and 2015, Lynch said the “disturbing trend” was a “sobering indication of how much more work remains to be done”...
