Teamsters, Rinker Hydro Conduit (Cemex) Reach Tentative Agreement  Teamster.org  ...Members of Teamsters Local 631, Las Vegas, who work at Rinker Hydro Conduit, will soon be voting on a tentative agreement, ending a 10-week strike. After weeks of negotiation sessions, the two sides remained far apart on terms of a new agreement. Late last week the gap between the two sides began to narrow but an agreement could not be reached... 

Niagara County OKs contract with Teamsters Union  Buffalo News  ...Niagara County has ratified a contract with the union that represents the workers at the county sewer district, completing its sixth union contract in the past two years. The full legal term for the charge for which Agustin Mendez-Vazquez got six years is “conspiracy to provide and maintain forced labor.” Mendez-Vazquez, 44, used violence, threats of violence and white collar schemes to keep his workers under his control...

$20M Uber settlement shows how tough working in the gig economy really is  Yahoo  ...the modern “future of work” was not as rosy as it appeared in the marketing materials and ad campaigns. On Thursday, the Federal Trade Commission announced a settlement with Uber for $20 million in response to charges that the company had made exaggerated claims for how much drivers would earn. For New York City, ad campaigns trumpeted median full-time earnings of over $90,000. Less than 10% of drivers in New York and San Francisco earned that much...

‘Quietly Suffering’: Former California Nail Salon Employees Sue for Labor Violations  NBC  ...Four former employees of a Southern California nail salon last month filed a complaint against their former employers for alleged wage and hour violations. According to the complaint, Jenny Hoang, Thu Pham, Trinh Thi Tyet Truong, and Tuyet Mai Nguyen say they did not receive minimum wage and overtime compensation during their time at Tustin Nail Spa in Orange County...
