Opponents say "right-to-work" weakens unions and allows non-union employees to enjoy the benefits of organized labor without paying dues. It's unclear whether passing the law will have any tangible effect on the state's economy...

One of the Most Important Union Fights in Years Is Happening in South Carolina Right Now  VICE  ...In South Carolina—an area hardly on liberal America's radar—a multiracial group of blue-collar workers is poised to deliver a simple message that requires no question marks and should resonate with wage-earners nationwide: They want a union. The End of Employees  Wall Street Journal  ...Never before have big employers tried so hard to hand over chunks of their business to contractors. The Building Trades’ Faustian Bargain  (opinion) American Prospect  ...Splitting the union vote won’t do for Trump what it did for Richard Nixon in his 1972 blowout victory over George McGovern, since the white working-class union household vote is many times smaller than it was in 1972. (In November’s exit polls, such voters constituted just 7 percent of the electorate.) But it can nonetheless weaken a labor movement that is barely a shell of what it used to be...
