Teamsters: AHCA Must Repeal, Not Delay the "Cadillac Tax"  Teamster.org  ...Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa called on the chairmen and ranking members of the House Committees on Ways and Means and Energy and Commerce to support a repeal of the 40 percent excise tax on comprehensive insurance plans in a letter sent today. Currently, the American Health Care Act (AHCA) only delays implementation of the so-called “Cadillac Tax” until 2025...

Corrections Officers Say Contract Negotiations Have Stalled  NHPR  ...New Hampshire correctional officers have declared an impasse in contract negotiations with the Governor’s office.  The Teamsters Union, which represents the officers, say the Governor isn’t doing enough to end years of excessive overtime for staff in the state’s prisons... 

WSJ: Who’s to Blame for the Trucker Shortage?  Teamster.org  ...As policy makers wring their hands over the shortage, an Ivy League sociologist who spent time as a long-haul driver says the deficit is largely the industry’s own doing. ATA largely blames the grueling demands of a job that puts workers on the road for long periods. But Steve Viscelli, a sociologist and fellow at the University of Pennsylvania’s Robert A. Fox Leadership Program, says the shortage is the product of an industry labor model that relies heavily on inexperienced drivers and independent contractors...

New York City Teamster Leaders Inaugurate New Term  Joint Council 16  ...The Teamsters Joint Council 16 executive board was sworn in today for a new four-year term to lead the 120,000 member Teamster organization, representing the 27 Teamster locals in New York City, Long Island, and the Hudson Valley. In the latest round, the labor court in the northern city of Antofagasta ordered BHP Billiton-controlled Minera Escondida Limitada to pay its unionized employees withheld gratuities worth 1.545 million pesos...

Berlin airport workers to strike on Friday over pay  DNA  ...Ground staff at Berlin's two airports will start a 25-hour strike on Friday morning over a pay claim, union Verdi said, stepping up action after several strikes in recent weeks that have forced the cancellation of more than 300 flights. Workers will walk out at 4 am local time (0300 GMT) on Friday and end the strike at about 0400 GMT on Saturday, said Verdi. The stoppage coincides with the world's biggest tourism trade fair, which ends in Berlin on March 12...

Trump's Nafta Revamp Could Near Boiling Point at Mexico Vote  Bloomberg  ...President Donald Trump’s timetable to negotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement threatens to slip into an election year for Mexico, which could feel the economic impact of the uncertainty especially if the agreement starts disintegrating. U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said Wednesday that the trade talks will probably begin in the latter part of 2017...

UK: Medical couriers join fight against gig economy  Financial Times  ...The legal battle over workers’ rights in the “gig economy” has spread to the healthcare sector after self-employed couriers who transport blood and pathology samples embarked on a fight to be classed as employees. Five couriers working for the Doctors Laboratory, which provides clinical laboratory diagnostic services to customers such as hospitals and GPs, filed their claim to an employment tribunal in central London...

W.Va.: Tensions soar over AG's right-to-work law action  WDTV  ...ensions are high once again now that our state attorney general has petitioned the Supreme Court to overrule a preliminary injunction over the right-to-work law. The law's been in limbo since about a month after it went into effect in July. There's still a big division between those of you who believe the law would make our state more competitive and those who believe right-to-work is inherently wrong...

Maryland bill would gradually raise minimum wage to $15  Baltimore Sun  ...Maryland's minimum wage would rise to $15 over several years under a measure before state lawmakers. Del. Jeffrey Waldstreicher, a Montgomery County Democrat, outlined the bill Tuesday before a House committee. Maryland's minimum wage is now set to reach $9.25 in July and increase to $10.10 in July of 2018...

New York union membership fell by 96,000 in 2016, data shows  Newsday  ...Unions in New York State lost 96,000 members last year, a reversal of the increase recorded between 2014 and 2015, new federal data show. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported last week that the ranks of private-sector and government unions in the state totaled 1.9 million in 2016, a drop of 5 percent from a year earlier...

Burlington Residents Vote in Favor of a $15 Minimum Wage  US News & World Report  ...Residents in Burlington, Vermont, are in favor of a $15 minimum wage. They voted to support the wage on an advisory ballot Tuesday by a vote of 5,004-1,618. The Burlington Free Press reports activists hoped a strong showing of support would encourage the Legislature to pass a bill raising the state wage. The state minimum wage is currently $10 an hour. It will increase to $10.50 in 2018...

Report: Transgender Arizonans struggle to land, keep jobs  AZ Central  ...Every transgender Arizonan interviewed by The Arizona Republic for this article reported experiencing discrimination in hiring or employment based on their gender identities, as well as fears of being outed and fired at work. Their stories reflect data from the largest study ever devoted to the lives of transgender people — the 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey — which found that 16 percent of Arizona respondents were unemployed and 28 percent lived in poverty...

Indianapolis workers go on strike to protest contract offer  CBS  ...About a dozen employees picketed a company on the west side of Indianapolis to protest a contract offer they say is unacceptable. The striking workers gathered at Sumco, 1351 S. Girls School Rd., which employs 73 union workers. Members of United Steelworkers Local 1999-10 voted to go on strike Wednesday night...

Union-Busting House Bill Would Silence the Voice of Workers, AFGE Says  PR Newswire  ...The American Federation of Government Employees strongly opposes legislation moving through the House that would limit an employee's access to union representation and financially penalize employees who voluntarily serve as union representatives. The Official Time Reform Act of 2017 would arbitrarily cap how much time union volunteers can spend per day on representational work... 

AT&T (T) Inking Deals with Communications Workers of America  Yahoo  ...U.S. telecom behemoth AT&T Inc. T is presently focused on signing multiple contracts with the Communications Workers of America (CWA). On Mar 6, as per a recent FierceTelecom report, both AT&T and CWA have finally approved labor agreement related to CWA-represented former DirecTV employees in four states...

Immigration is the only thing keeping U.S. work force growing  CBS  ...The only way for the U.S. labor force to grow over the next two decades is for new immigrants to replace retiring baby boomers. So concludes the Pew Research Center in a new report that projects that the U.S. working-age population (people aged 25-64), which was 173.2 million in 2015, will shrink to 165.6 million by 2035 without immigrants entering the country...

Trump Takes Credit For Thousands Of New Exxon Jobs, But The Project Began Years Ago  BuzzFeed  ...President Trump on Monday took credit for an ExxonMobil plan to build and expand oil and natural gas plants on the Texas and Louisiana coasts, but those investments began years ago before he ran for the White House.
