Mexican autoworkers’ compensation is 19 percent that of their unionized U.S. counterparts, and auto parts workers earn even less — $2.40 an hour. 4 Years After Rana Plaza Tragedy, What's Changed For Bangladeshi Garment Workers?  NPR  ...On April 24, 2013, the eight-story Rana Plaza building outside Dhaka, Bangladesh, collapsed, killing more than 1,100 people and injuring thousands of others. The incident shook Bangladesh's $28 billion garment industry and drew attention to horrific conditions for factory employees. But four years later, a report finds only 17 of 72 apparel and footwear companies contacted have agreed to implement a transparency pledge...

Iranian workers continue to struggle for independent trade unions  Equal Times  ...Despite social justice being a central tenet of the 1979 revolution, there has been no change to the rights, working conditions or status of Iran’s labouring class. Labour rights groups say that the rights of Iranian workers have come under increasing attack during the last two decades. Tear gas, flames and 35 dead as Venezuela crisis flares  CBS  ...Thousands of protesters were met with plumes of tear gas in Venezuela's capital Wednesday, just a short distance from where President Nicolas Maduro delivered a decree kicking off a process to rewrite the polarized nation's constitution. The robots are essentially high-tech rolling coolers loaded with sensors that can read the environment...

Wisconsin prevailing-wage repeal coasts through state Senate panel  Daily Reporter  ...A panel of state lawmakers on Tuesday gave the green light to a bill that would eliminate prevailing-wage requirements for state projects. Senate Bill 216 would repeal what’s left of Wisconsin’s prevailing-wage laws and would come on top of lawmakers’ decision two years ago to eliminate the minimum pay requirements for local projects...

Wisconsin Assembly set to loosen child work permit law  Herald Leader  ...Wisconsin's 16- and 17-year-olds wouldn't need permission from their parents to get jobs under a Republican bill moving through the Legislature. The proposal is set to pass the Assembly on Tuesday. It would eliminate the requirement that children 16 and older obtain work permits. The permits cost $10 each and require a parent's written consent...

Florida state workers to see pay raise, pension changes  Palm Beach Post  ...State workers will be in line for pay raises, although the plan is coupled with major changes in the state pension fund and employee health insurance, under a bill approved Monday by the Senate Appropriations Committee. The legislation (SB 7030) represents a compromise between the Senate, which supported a pay increase, and the House...

Vermont House passes paid family leave  WCAX  ...Workers' rights took center stage at the Vermont Statehouse Tuesday. The House passed a bill that would guarantee you get paid time off to have a baby or take care of a loved one. But under this plan, fellow employees would foot the bill, not employers. Supporters of the measure wanted to do more but scaled benefits back to make sure it passed in the House... 

Minimum Wage Remains Hot Topic in Nevada Legislature  KTVN  ...Two bills were introduced earlier in the 79th Legislative session which would increase Nevada's minimum wage. While Assembly Bill 175 would have boosted the minimum wage to $15 per hour, that bill was changed. That amount is no longer on the table, but the bill could still affect what the minimum wage would be in cases where the employer provides benefits... 

Supporters of Maryland paid sick leave call on Hogan to sign bill  Baltimore Sun  ...Supporters of sick leave rallied in front of a Highlandtown bar Wednesday morning, calling on Gov. Larry Hogan to sign into law a bill that would provide paid time off for illness for some 700,000 Maryland workers. Del. Luke Clippinger, the bill's sponsor in the House of Delegates, said that since both he and the governor recently had cancer, they know how important it is to have time off to get treatment and recover...

AT&T Wireless workers threaten strike  Buffalo News  ...About 21,000 AT&T Wireless workers, including about 75 in Western New York, are threatening to strike, after their union opted not to extend an expired contract. The Communications Workers of America on Friday gave the company 72 hours' notice it was ending a contract extension, citing frustration with a lack of progress in bargaining...

AT&T Workers Blast Outsourcing of Jobs to Dominican Republic  Fortune  ...Some of AT&T's unionized workers engaged in tough negotiations with the company are borrowing a tactic that helped Verizon workers get a better contract last year. To highlight the issue of call center jobs being outsourced to foreign countries, AT&T workers in the Communications Workers of America union traveled to the Dominican Republic this week to meet with some of their counterparts... 

Hollywood crisis averted: Writers reach deal with studios  CNN  ...It was a cliffhanger ending, but the Writers Guild of America and the studios have reached a new deal that will keep the scripts coming and Hollywood at work. The threat of the first strike in a decade was averted after a marathon negotiating session that went past the midnight deadline...

New NLRB Chairman Philip Miscimarra expected to undo recent pro-union changes  Washington Examiner  ...Philip Miscimarra, the new chairman of the National Labor Relations Board, is poised to be the Antonin Scalia of workplace law, business and labor experts say. He will have the opportunity to roll back the board's recent, mainly pro-union changes now that President Trump has put him in charge of the nation's main federal labor law enforcement agency...

Labor Board Rule to Speed Up Union Elections Shows Mixed Results  Bloomberg  ...The National Labor Relations Board’s “quickie” election rule has sped up workplace unionization drives, but it’s not necessarily giving unions an unfair advantage, as some predicted. The new representation election rule was implemented in 2015 in an effort to streamline the union elections process...

The House just passed a bill that affects overtime pay  CNN  ...The measure, backed by Republicans, would let employers offer workers paid time off instead of time-and-a-half pay the next time they put in extra hours. The vote tally was largely along party lines, with no Democrats voting in favor of the bill. Six Republicans also voted against it. G.O.P. leadership has touted the legislation, called the Working Families Flexibility Act, as an attempt to codify flexibility for employees...

Funding agreement protects orphan miner health care, but doesn't resolve pension issues  Post-Gazette  ...A new government funding agreement permanently protects thousands of retired miners’ health care, but doesn’t resolve pension shortfalls that also worry coal workers. Bronx car washers walk off job as workers around city suffer labor woes  NY Daily News  ...City “carwasheros” at a Bronx facility have walked off the job — the latest group of New York workers caught up in labor strife. The walkout followed two protest rallies outside the shops of car wash owners who are in negotiations with the mainly immigrant workforce about overtime pay. The rallies targeted Cross Bronx Car Wash and Main Street Car Wash in Flushing, Queens...
