The proposal calls for Congress to create a nonprofit private-sector corporation tasked primarily with making loans to poorly funded plans or to employers that participate in such plans...

Teamsters at Garda Ratify New Collective Agreement  Teamsters Canada  ...Workers of GardaWorld Cash Services affiliated with the Teamsters Union ratified a new collective agreement yesterday. Over 90% of members who voted were in favour of the employer’s proposal. Truck safety was the main issue in these negotiations. The fleet of trucks will meet higher safety levels, therefore giving more protection to the workers... 

CN Rail, Teamsters reach tentative deal to avoid strike  CBC  ...Canadian National Railway and the union for more than 3,000 conductors, train and yard workers have reached an agreement in principle on a new collective agreement, averting a possible labour disruption that could have started early Tuesday morning. Teamsters Canada Rail Conference president Doug Finnson told CBC News the two sides are still working on the wording of the agreement...

Lead activist arrested in Morocco protests over unemployment  BBC  ...Mr Zefzafi is seen as a figurehead among protesters in al-Hoceima and the circumstances of his arrest are unlikely to ease tensions, BBC North Africa Correspondent Rana Jawad says. Illinois Lawmakers Approve Increase To Minimum Wage  CBS  ...State lawmakers have approved a plan to increase Illinois’ minimum wage to $15 over five years. The Senate voted 30-23 Wednesday evening, a day after the House backed it. The state’s minimum wage is $8.25. The proposal would raise it incrementally until 2022. Missouri: Greitens signs bill scrapping union requirements with Wisconsin governor looking on  Kansas City Star  ...Gov. Eric Greitens on Tuesday signed legislation banning local governments from giving preferential treatment to union contractors on public construction projects. Wisconsin: 2016 marks worst year for job growth under Gov. Teachers at D.C. charter school launch campaign to unionize  Washington Post  ...Teachers at a D.C. charter school are pushing to unionize, citing a desire to provide more resources to students and a need to stabilize the teaching force. About 80 percent of the 35 teachers, librarians and social workers at Cesar Chavez Public Charter School at Chavez Prep Middle School in Northwest signed a petition to ask the school’s administration to recognize their union...

Casino workers protest health-care hikes  Providence Journal  ...Workers from Twin River Casino, in Lincoln, protested at the State House on Tuesday, warning that they might strike in the wake of higher costs for their health insurance. The workers, members of UNITE HERE Local 26, carried petitions to lawmakers with photos of more than 300 food and beverage workers who have pledged to join the strike, according to a news release from the union...

Minimum-wage poultry workers awarded $600,000 in back pay  Charlotte Observer  ...A Union County company that rounds up live chickens for poultry processors has paid nearly $600,000 in back wages and an equal amount in damages to 838 workers, the U.S. Department of Labor said Tuesday. Unicon Inc. of Marshville paid the back wages to its chicken catchers and van drivers as part of a settlement agreement with the Department of Labor...

Unions Prep for Life After ‘Fair Share’ Fees  Bloomberg  ...Public worker advocates are already sharpening their lobbying tools in anticipation of the day when unions may no longer be able to charge “fair share” fees to nonmembers. “People are starting to think about what happens if there’s a new Friedrichs decision and it goes the wrong way,” Barry Broad, a California lawyer who lobbies for the Teamsters and other unions, told Bloomberg...

Lyft drivers call for investigation into alleged ‘wage theft’  Washington Post  ...A New York labor organization is calling for an investigation of Lyft and other ride-hailing services for allegedly cheating drivers on their fares. The Independent Drivers Guild (IDG), which formed last year as an affiliate of an existing labor union, said Wednesday that Lyft has been engaged in “large-scale deception” by improperly deducting more than 11 percent from drivers’ fares...

U.S. Senators Ask: What’s Up at OSHA?  Fair Warning  ...In the four months since President Trump took office, the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration has issued four news releases announcing penalties for job safety violations.
