United as Teamsters
The Teamsters Union and United Airlines announced jointly in August that they have reached an agreement in principle for a joint collective bargaining agreement covering more than 9,000 technicians and related employees.
This agreement is the culmination of a nationwide push to get the Teamsters a fair contract at United. In March, United Airlines mechanics protested for an industry-leading agreement by demonstrating outside key maintenance bases at the San Francisco, Houston and Orlando airports. They also held similar actions at United Airlines shareholder meetings.
The two sides came together again starting in late-June with revised offers and negotiated a contract structured around the principle issues in August.
“The Teamsters have a long history of taking action to right injustices against workers by employers who put profits over people,” said Jim Hoffa, Teamsters General President. “This industry-leading agreement proves once again that working conditions and compensation in the airline industry can be raised with Teamster power.”
“This is a monumental moment for our United members,” said Capt. David Bourne, Director of the Teamsters Airline Division. “I want to congratulate everyone involved for achieving this industry leading agreement in principle which will set a new standard upon ratification. This result would not have been possible without the dedication of Federal Mediator Gerry McGuckin, both negotiating committees and the involvement of CEO Oscar Munoz.”
