Justice for Sanitation Workers at Republic/Allied Waste
The Teamsters Union is mourning the death of Alvin Turner, who participated in the 1968 Memphis sanitation workers' strike and who has stood with the Teamsters over the years to help raise standards for workers in the waste industry.
Teamsters throughout the country are mourning the death of Robert Morales, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 350 in Daly City, California who also served as the first and only Director of the union’s Solid Waste, Recycling and Related Industries Division. Morales died January 26, 2015.
(ST. LOUIS, MO) – On Saturday, Teamsters gathered with St. Louis-area residents, union members, elected officials, faith leaders, environmental experts and attorneys about Republic Service’s [NYSE: RSG] West Lake Landfill. West Lake is a Superfund site in Bridgeton, Mo. that contains 8,700 tons of buried uncontained radioactive nuclear wastes adjacent to an underground landfill fire.
(ATLANTA) - Teamsters who work at Republic Services, Bill Gates’ giant trash corporation [NYSE: RSG], are fighting back against discrimination. Republic workers wore stickers in six states today to protest Republic’s wage discrimination system. In Atlanta, new hires are paid less at all levels for doing the same job as workers hired previously.
(WASHINGTON) – The Teamsters Union is lauding the Putnam County (Fla.) Board of Commissioners today on its decision to reject Republic Services’ [NYSE: RSG] bid to buy the Putnam County landfill.
Since 2010, a landfill fire has been moving toward 8,700 tons of unlined illegally dumped radioactive waste in Bridgeton, Mo. The site is in the middle of working-class neighborhoods, right next to the Saint Louis Airport, and near a hospital, schools and a great number of businesses.
(TUKWILA, Wash.) – Garbage, recycle, and yard waste drivers, employed by Allied Waste/Republic Services, honored picket lines early this morning that were established by striking Local 377 Teamsters from Youngstown, Ohio. Picket lines were set up at the company’s facilities in Seattle, Lynnwood, and Kent/SeaTac.
(FREMONT, Calif.) – Workers on strike at Republic Services/Allied Waste extended picket lines to five Northern California locations today, on the anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., who was killed in Memphis supporting striking waste workers.
