Teamsters Fight Plans to Close Profitable Brewery
Teamsters representing more than 5,000 AB/InBev, MillerCoors and Molson Coors brewery workers throughout the United States and Canada joined their union in the fight to save Teamster jobs at MillerCoors.
MillerCoors announced on Sept. 14, 2015 a plan to close the Eden, N.C. brewery by September 2016.
“Shutting the Eden brewery will destroy more than 500 good jobs and devastate North Carolina families,” said Jim Hoffa, Teamsters General President.
“It’s not too late for MillerCoors to change course and keep this world-class brewery operational,” said Mike McGaha, President of Teamsters Local 391 which represents the Eden workers.
The CEOs of MillerCoors, Molson Coors and SABMiller are the targets of a new social media campaign launched by the Teamsters recently. Originally drawn up around Super Bowl 50 seeing as the Denver (home of Molson Coors) Broncos were competing against the North Carolina (site of Eden brewery) Panthers, the campaign has now transformed into a nationwide effort to turn up the heat on the company’s plan to shut down the profitable, award-winning brewery in Eden, N.C.
Brewery of the Year
During Super Bowl 50 weekend, Teamsters from Local 391 and others handbilled North Carolina bars and restaurants encouraging fans through social media to send a message to MillerCoors to keep the Eden brewery open and operational.
The Eden brewery has been named MillerCoors’ brewery of the year for three of the last five years. It is one of the most efficient, productive and profitable facilities in the whole MillerCoors system according to MillerCoors’ analysis.
Support for the social media campaign has been strong, with more than 3,000 e-mail letters already sent to the CEOs to protest their plan.
“If MillerCoors doesn’t want to produce beer in North Carolina anymore, the company should sell the operation to another brewer so as to keep good jobs in North Carolina and live up to its commitments to the community,” said David Laughton, Director of the Teamsters Brewery and Soft Drink Workers Conference.
