The over 600 classified workers of the Compton, Calif., Unified School District (CUSD) voted to accept their first Teamster Local 911 contract with 95 percent voting in favor of ratification on Thursday, June 29, 2017.

The three-year agreement ends years of stagnant wages with guaranteed increases and significantly drops the cost of health care allowing hundreds of new members to obtain health coverage for the first time while saving others thousands of dollars.

“We are proud to have an agreement that will benefit all our Compton Unified School District members and their families,” said Raymond Whitmer, Local 911 Secretary-Treasurer in Bellflower, Calif.  “It was a tough road but the members of the Compton Unified School District stood strong and never gave up.”

“Seeing the overwhelming support by our members validates the countless hours and hard work given by my colleagues and the staff of Teamsters Local 911,” said Maria Zendeja, CUSD Clerk. “This is a great first step in making a better workplace for us all.”

The CUSD classified workers joined Local 911 in August of last year.

“We deserve respect and fairness in the workplace,” said Ladonnia Swinton, CUSD IT Help Desk Technician. “I believe we have found it with the Teamsters.”

The workers serve the more than 20,000 students that attend Compton public schools.

Teamsters Local 911 represents over 10,000 public and private sector workers throughout Southern California.
