    Big Labor’s Communications Playbook

May 18, 2024 | LABOR UNIONS | Support for labor unions grew in 2023, with workers voting to unionize 83% of the time, according to the National Labor Relations Board. The success is due in part to an intentional overhaul of their communication strategies, union organizers told Axios. Union wins have swept the Southeast in 2024, with the United Auto Workers (UAW) recent win at Volkswagen's Chattanooga, Tennessee, plant and the Association of Flight Attendants' Breeze Airways win in Charleston, South Carolina. Mercedes workers in Alabama are voting this week on whether to join UAW, with results expected Friday afternoon. Labor groups across industries have pivoted to nimble, blunt, and personalized communication campaigns that are being deployed through social media, local and national press, and direct outreach to workers. Teamsters Denounce Molson Coors at Shareholder Meeting

May 16, 2024 | STRIKES | Teamsters General Secretary-Treasurer Fred Zuckerman, along with rank-and-file Teamsters from across the U.S., demanded that Molson Coors negotiate a fair contract and end the strike in Fort Worth, Texas, at the company’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Golden, Colo. “Molson Coors brags to shareholders about an ‘incredible year of growth’ but you know who make this company successful—the workers!” Zuckerman said. “We’re here today to remind them of that. We’re here to demand that Molson Coors delivers a fair contract for 420 Teamsters in Fort Worth.” Members of Local 997 were forced out on strike on February 17, after Molson Coors failed to come to terms on an agreement that rewards Teamsters with their fair share of the company’s profits. Workers are seeking pay raises, improved retirement benefits, and to maintain good Teamsters health care. Teamsters

Unions, Lawmakers Protest Boeing Firefighter Lockout

May 16, 2024 | LOCKOUTS | Union leaders and U.S. lawmakers on Monday criticized Boeing's lockout of its unionized firefighters and urged the planemaker to reach a contract deal. Earlier this month, Boeing locked out about 130 members of the International Association of Fire Fighters Local I-66 who rejected two contract offers - a move that last week drew the concern of President Joe Biden. At a rally outside Boeing headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, IAFF President Edward Kelly, AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler, and Representative Val Hoyle urged Boeing to make a deal. "We want to get a deal. We just want to be treated fairly," Kelly told Reuters, who said Boeing wants firefighters to work nearly 20 years before reaching top pay but added he is hopeful talks will soon resume. Reuters News Agency Related: Local I-66 represents 125 firefighters and emergency medical workers who protect the Boeing Company’s people and property.
