GCC/IBT Local 458M Affiliates with Joint Council 25

June 10, 2006

On June 1, Graphic Communications Conference/International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 458M in Carol Stream, Illinois affiliated with Joint Council 25.

The GCC/IBT was established on January 1, 2005, with the merger of the Graphic Communications International Union and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. This merger kept the GCIU a separate conference within the Teamsters.

GCC/IBT Local 458M is a graphic arts trade union which represents approximately 2,300 men and women in the Chicago area, who are employed in desktop publishing, electronic pre press, convention pre press, graphic design, publishing, flexo, pressroom and bindery.

Though each graphics local has the opportunity to join its area Joint Council, it is not a requirement.

“Over the past year, we have seen a lot of advantages to joining Joint Council 25,” said Bob Miller, President of Local 458M. “Having a separate Conference doesn’t mean we have to stay separate from our Chicago-area Teamster brothers and sisters. Now is a great time for us to work together.”

Miller cited organizing support and opportunities as one of the main reasons for the affiliation.

"Since 2005, we have partnered with Local 458M on several successful campaigns, including picketing a shareholders meeting in Des Plaines and protesting at Crate & Barrel in Chicago this past April,” said John T. Coli, President of Joint Council 25. “And because Local 458M members are already Teamsters, this is a great opportunity for us all to work together on the many organizing opportunities in our area."

Members of Local 458M work at printers around Illinois, including Quebecor, Fort Dearborn Press, Wallace Press and Lehigh Press, where the workers print everything from food wrappers to catalogs.
