Illinois Teamster Awarded $9,900 in Back Pay and Benefits

May 22, 2003

With the help of Local 347, Teamster member Jeri Walker recently won back his job and was awarded approximately $9,900 in back wages and benefits. Walker is a construction worker for Foster Wheeler Zack Inc. at a Southern Illinois power plant, and serves as a steward. A grievance panel unanimously determined that the company unjustly fired Walker and violated three articles in the contract.

The same day the company dismissed Walker, they rehired him to work half-day shifts while allowing an individual with less seniority to work full-time. In addition to half-day shifts not being included in the contract language, the panel also determined that the employer had violated two more provisions of the agreement concerning overtime pay and the handling of stewards.

Along with the job reinstatement and award of $7,700 in back pay, Foster Wheeler Zack Inc. was ordered to pay more than $2,170 in contributions to Walker’s pension and health & welfare plans for the time he was out of work, and allow him to resume his position as steward.

“We are very pleased that we were able to come to Jeri’s rescue, and correct the injustice that was done to him and his family,” said Terry Rawson, Construction Agent and Secretary-Treasurer for Local 347 in West Frankfort, Illinois.

Walker has been a member of Local 347 since 1988.
