Local 372 Ratifies Strong Contract With Macomb Daily

Members of Teamsters Local 372 in Detroit recently ratified their new contract with the Macomb Daily. The workers won key concessions that will raise their wages by $40 per week over the next three years, and that awards a $1,000 lump bonus to each of them after the first year.

This victory came after the paper failed in its attempt to force a new overtime policy. The policy would have required a minimum of 40 hours worked in one week before a worker could qualify for overtime, instead of a daily minimum of eight hours.

"We came out with a good deal," said Dennis Nazelli, Local 372 Secretary-Treasurer. "We were able to preserve our health care package and block the company's attempt to restructure the overtime policy."

Another major victory for the union was the inclusion of the phrase "just cause" in the contract language regarding the dismissal of employees. Prior contracts allowed the newspaper to fire workers at will with no recourse for an employee to challenge the decision. With the new contract language, the workers will now be able to file grievances if they feel they were wrongly dismissed.

The new contract, which was ratified on January 18, runs through January 31, 2007.
