Local 995 Welcomes More Rio Hotel Workers

January 4, 2006

On December 30, 84 front-end workers at the Rio Hotel in Las Vegas joined Local 995under a card-check agreement that General President Jim Hoffa negotiated. Workers cited job security as one of their main concerns.

The newest Teamsters include front-desk workers, room reservations and PBX workers (phone operators who receive incoming calls).

They join nearly 150 of their coworkers in the back end, which signed cards to join the Teamsters on November 8. Rio back-end workers comprise valet, warehouse, goods receiving and laborers who do miscellaneous assignments.

“We are thrilled to welcome these new members,” said Mike Magnani, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 995 in Las Vegas. “The General President helped work out the card-check agreement for us and within a few months, we had 230 new workers.”

A committee of workers is meeting on January 11 to start working on proposals for their first contract.
