Clark County School District Employees To Vote For Teamster Representation

(LAS VEGAS) –– Today, in a major victory for support staff workers at the Clark County School District (CCSD) in southern Nevada, the Employee-Management Relations Board (EMRB) announced a union election to be held November. The ballots will be mailed on November 2 and counted on December 5 in a simple-majority vote for Teamster representation at the nation’s fifth largest school district.

“It’s been a long road, but change is finally coming to CCSD,” said Ernie Ixtlahuac, a CCSD employee who works at the northwest school bus yard in the district. “We are more united than ever and will be out in full force in support of forming our union with Local 14.”

The decision comes after two previous election wins and years of battling an unfair super-majority rule for representation. In February, Teamsters Local 14 overwhelmingly won 71 percent of the school workers’ vote to join the Teamsters Union over the Education Support Employees Association (ESEA). Despite democratically voting to join the Teamsters in both elections, a super-majority – 50-percent-plus-1 of eligible voters – was required to win the election.

“After two overwhelming votes by CCSD support staff in favor of joining Teamsters Local 14, the EMRB has recognized the unfair nature of the previous two elections and is now giving workers the opportunity to vote by a simple majority. I applaud the Board for ruling in favor of democracy,” said Larry Griffith, Secretary-Treasurer and Principal Officer of Teamsters Local 14.

The nearly 11,000-person bargaining unit consists of a wide-range of workers, including clerical, custodial, maintenance, school bus and cafeteria workers who work for the District’s 336 schools. The election is scheduled to take place between November 2 and December 5 by mail-in ballot and will be overseen by the EMRB in accordance with Nevada state law.

Teamsters Local 14 represents over 3,500 workers in the public sector and distribution, warehouse and mechanic industry. Local 14 has represented public and private sector workers across Nevada since 1955. The Teamsters Public Services Division represents more than 273,000 public employees, including school employees in districts across the country.
