(WASHINGTON)—Pilots for Hyannis, Mass.-based Cape Air voted today to rejoin the Teamsters. The vote was ordered by the National Mediation Board (NMB) because management interfered with a previous election.

Two-thirds of the pilots voted for the Teamsters. Though there are about 250 pilots employed by Cape Air, only those pilots who voted in the previous election were eligible to cast ballots.

“Teamsters have the focus, strength and experience to improve pay, benefits, working conditions and labor-management relations at Cape Air,” said Teamsters Airline Division Director Capt. David Bourne.

“I’m pleased that the Cape Air pilots decided on strong Teamster representation,” Bourne said. “They will have the benefit of an independent local union backed by 1.4 million members.”

Cape Air operates in southern New England, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, the Caribbean, Guam, Rota and Saipan.

Cape Air pilots on May 11 had chosen to be represented by the Cape Air Pilots Association. On Nov. 18, the NMB ruled that the May election was tainted because the carrier had endorsed the opposing union and helped it win the election.

Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents 1.4 million hardworking men and women in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.
