Massachusetts School Bus Drivers Join Local 653
First Student school bus drivers who transport students for the Silver Lake – Pembroke, Massachusetts school districts recently voted 51-20 to join Teamsters Local 653.
“We want the support of a union because there is favoritism, the health care is overpriced and our wages are stagnant. This was a positive vote, a good turnout and a good thing,” said Christine O’Brien, a driver.
The 78 workers join the more than 225 First Student workers who are already members of the South Easton-based local union.
“We’re looking to bring these workers up to the standards our other members enjoy through their established Teamster contracts,” said Michael Clark, President of Local 653.
Twenty-four First Student workers in Duxbury will have the opportunity to join Local 653 in a vote to be held sometime next month.
