Ohio Ambulance Service Workers Join Local 507
Workers from the country’s largest ambulance service provider, American Medical Response (AMR), recently voted to join Local 507 in Cleveland. There are 41 workers in the bargaining unit.
The paramedics and emergency medical technicians chose to become Teamsters even after the AMR flew in a corporate union-buster, who feted them at a restaurant and told them that if the Teamsters won the vote, they would be forced to close the Cleveland facilities and the workers would lose their jobs.
In spite of those fear tactics by the employer, the workers persevered and voted in favor of joining the Teamsters,” said Rick Kepler, Joint Council 41 Organizer.
In early January, the workers will have their first contract proposal meeting and begin electing their negotiation committee.
This campaign is part of Joint Council 41’s wrap up of a tough year of organizing in an Ohio economy that does not favor the workers in this hard-hit state.
