Atlantic Aviation Workers Join Teamsters
On April 17, workers at Atlantic Aviation in Louisville, Ky. voted in favor of joining Local 89 by a 3-1 margin. The new bargaining unit includes 24 workers who fuel private and commercial aircraft at Standiford Field in Louisville.
The workers sought representation by the Teamsters after Atlantic Aviation took away their overtime pay, insurance benefits, seniority rights and job security.
“One prime example was when the company fired a 23-year worker for economic purposes,” said Kevin Evans, an organizer for Local 89, which is based in Louisville. “This worker, who had earned a lot of vacation time and was making $19 per hour, was terminated and replaced with a worker earning only $10.50.”
The Local 89 representatives welcome the new Teamsters and look forward to negotiating a decent contract for these workers.
