VIDEO: From IAM to AMFA to Teamsters: A UAL Mechanic’s Story

After enduring years of weak IAM representation at United Airlines, Joe Foley, a 26-year mechanic out of ORD, had enough. He quickly became active in a campaign to replace the IAM with AMFA – he felt AMFA’s exclusive craft focus would mean better representation. But after five more years of concessions and massive outsourcing under AMFA, Joe lost his faith in AMFA and in unions altogether – until he saw the Teamster difference.

When his coworkers started organizing in 2008 to become Teamsters, Joe was disillusioned and feeling hopeless. He didn’t think the Teamsters could make any difference at UAL. So he sat out the campaign and refused to vote for the Teamsters. Fortunately, most of his coworkers did the opposite: they got involved and mobilized to cast their vote for the Teamsters.

Joe immediately saw the difference when the Teamsters began representing UAL mechanics. He saw union reps on the floor and Teamsters enforcing contract language. His work life and home life completely changed. With less stress on the job, he was able to enjoy more time at home with his family, feeling secure thanks to a strong contract at work.
