First Student School Bus Workers Choose Teamsters

First Student school bus drivers and monitors in Adrian, Mich., have voted to join Teamsters Local 1038 in Detroit. There are 29 drivers and monitors in the bargaining unit.

“We want to be treated equally, and we would like to have some sick days. When we get sick, we don’t have any,” said Cindy Justice, an aide on a bus for children with special needs. “We’re happy we’re Teamsters now so we can be treated fairly.”

“This is the second group of First Student workers that have organized with Local 1038 in less than a year. We’re happy to welcome the drivers and monitors in Adrian to the Teamsters,” said Greg Nowak, President of Teamsters Local 1038 and Joint Council 43.

The drivers and monitors will be covered by the Teamsters’ national master agreement with First Student. The agreement covers over 21,000 Teamsters who work at First Student. Economics and other individual gains will be negotiated by the local union.
