(WASHINGTON) – The International Brotherhood of Teamsters today issued its thanks to Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., for the work he’s done on behalf of working Americans throughout his 40-year career in the House. Miller announced Monday that he will retire after his current term ends early next year.

Miller, who came to Washington in the wake of the Watergate scandal after winning election to his Bay Area-district in 1974, is a staunch advocate of labor, education, health care and the environment. He helped lead the charge to increase the minimum wage the last time Congress did so in 2007 and has repeatedly advocated on behalf of fair pay for women. He has also spoken out on behalf of workers’ rights to organize and collectively bargain.

At a time when the everyday struggles facing many Americans are getting lost in the shuffle before Congress, George Miller has always been there to stick up for workers, said Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa. Workers and their families have a loyal friend in Rep. Miller, and he won’t be easily replaced.

The senior Democrat on the House Education and Workforce Committee is fighting to extend unemployment benefits and to protect workers from unfair trade deals. The Teamsters laud Miller for his tireless work and stand ready to assist him.
