Employees of the Pekin, Illinois, street department, wastewater plant, solid waste department and other workers have ratified new contracts for representation with Teamsters Local 627 in Peoria.

The four, three-year contracts cover 159 city workers.  According to the Journal Star newspaper, the tentative agreements were reached on May 20 and the contract votes occurred May 29.

Keith Gleason, president of Teamsters Local 627, said that the union and the city had been meeting about the contracts since early March, according to the Journal.   The new agreement calls for a 2.25 percent wage increase in the first year and a 3 percent wage increase in the last two years of the contracts.

In addition to workers employed at the wastewater plant and the street and solid waste department, the unit also includes bus drivers, mechanics, clerks and secretaries for various city departments.

Prior to the ratification votes, Gleason had told the Journal that “If the agreement is a good agreement and a fair agreement you will have a good ratification vote.”  Ultimately, the contracts were nearly unanimously approved by the employees.
