Teamsters Local 264 members who work for Costanzo’s Bakery in Cheektowaga, N.Y., have voted to ratify an agreement providing for improvements to wages, health care, benefits and more. The 10 route sales drivers sell and deliver baked goods across western New York.
“It started out contentious, but in the end we got a very good contract that is a fair deal for everybody involved,” said Tony Vaccaro, a business agent with Local 264 in Cheektowaga.
The three-year contract includes yearly increases to the base salary and commission rate. The members’ personal health care contributions were significantly lowered and they gained four additional paid holidays. A provision was also included that gives bargaining unit members the opportunity to secure extra work hours on their days off—work that would have traditionally been given to subcontractors.
As a resolution to charges against the company that Local 264 had filed with the National Labor Relations Board, a settlement was reached that created a new position to fill in for vacancies due to vacations and overflow work. This work would previously have been performed by management or a subcontractor.
“I’ve been working with Costanzo’s for four years. I’m excited to join the Teamsters to bring some stability and guarantees that we haven’t had in the past,” said Chris Morales, a driver.
Costanzo’s Bakery route sales drivers voted overwhelmingly in June 2014 to join Local 264.
