Teamsters Deliver Results for Annual Food Drive
(SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine) – This year’s sixth annual “Feed the County” campaign in Aroostook County, Maine, once again garnered a successful result thanks to efforts by Teamsters Local 340 in South Portland, Maine.
At Saturday’s “Potato Blossom Parade” in Fort Fairfield, Maine, the Teamsters collected 10,000 pounds of food. They also raised $6,000 in monetary donations. This allows Catholic Charities to obtain 54,000 pounds of food, thereby permitting their food bank to be fully operational for one-and-a-half months.
This statewide food drive benefits the Catholic Charities’ Hunger & Relief food banks in Aroostook County through this “Feed the County” food collection effort. Catholic Charities maintains two food banks, which supply food to 24 food pantries throughout Aroostook County, an area the size of both Rhode Island and Connecticut. The organization partners with two schools that operate pantries in their schools; as well as with the Aroostook Agency on Aging, thereby assisting 455 senior citizens; and Aroostook County Action’s USDA commodity food distribution program.
Teamsters Local 340 Business Agent Traci Place said she is thrilled with the results.
“We want to thank everyone out there who both contributed and helped collect the donations. The Teamsters are always excited to help Catholic Charities feed the county,” Place said.
Place said additional monetary donations are expected to continue coming in, stating that it is not too late for people to contribute.
Monetary donations are still being accepted via a check made out to “Catholic Charities Maine” and is tax deductible as a 501(c)(3) organization. Checks can be mailed to Teamsters Local Union 340, 144 Thadeus Street, South Portland, ME 04106.
