Don’t Pass on the Chance to Shape Your Future
Tomorrow, Americans will bring to an end one of the most contentious presidential elections in modern political history.
But while it hasn’t always been pleasant, that doesn’t mean it isn’t important. In fact, it is – very, very important. The real tragedy of this process is that the issues have become secondary for too many everyday Americans.
Many workers continue to struggle to keep food on the table and a roof over the heads of their families, despite working full time. Wages aren’t high enough, working conditions continue to worsen, infrastructure investment lags and retirements are far from secure.
Unions can help with these issues. Workers who are members of organized labor get paid more than $10,000 a year compared to non-union workers, can call out employers who don’t provide safe workplaces and are more likely to receive retirement benefits. They also have the skills to build America’s future through better roads, rails, power plants and water systems.
That won’t happen, however, if union power is curtailed. And that is something Donald Trump wants to do. He has called from the creation of a national so-called “right to work” law. And he has done all he can to curb unionization at his own hotel in Las Vegas. So why should workers believe otherwise?
Just because someone is rich, it doesn’t mean he knows anything about how to improve the livelihoods of others. It doesn’t mean they can handle the complexities of formulating policy that will help improve the economy so the many can benefit.
The time for choosing is upon us. At a time when many workers continue to struggle to earn a wage that supports a family and more jobs are increasingly being sent overseas, now is not the time to take a pass on the electoral process. The U.S. needs the best and brightest who recognize that people are our greatest resource — and they deserve to be treated with respect and dignity.
