Police officers and security agents at the Lee County Port Authority in Fort Myers, Florida have voted to form their union with Teamsters Local 79.
The workers voted on Tuesday, Dec. 13 and Wednesday, Dec. 14. The vote was 30-12 and there are 43 workers in the bargaining unit.
The officers and agents work at two area airports.
“We’re proud to represent new law enforcement members in our local and we look forward to working with the Port Authority to negotiate a fair and equitable contract,” said Ken Wood, President of Local 79 in Tampa.
The workers want to stop favoritism and unfair promotions in the workplace, and want to see an end to inconsistent work rules. They also want to gain job security and a voice and respect on the job.
Jeff Testa, a UPS member from Local 79, helped as a volunteer organizer on the campaign.
