Statement from New York Teamsters on DACA
NEW YORK, NY – Teamsters Joint Council 16 President George Miranda, who also serves as president of the Teamsters National Hispanic Caucus, had the following statement on the administration’s decision to end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), which has provided legal status for 800,000 young immigrants. Joint Council 16 represents 120,000 workers in greater New York.
“The Teamsters stand with immigrant workers and immigrant families. We stand with our members and their families, whether they have documents or not.
“Ending DACA is cruel. Imagine being one of these 800,000 young people. You probably don’t remember another country other than America. You went to college, you got a good job, and you worked hard. You’ve done everything right. Now the government is saying you aren’t the American you thought you were.
“These are America’s kids. We aren’t going to let them be kicked out of the country or pushed back into the shadows.
“One of our own members was picked up by ICE just 12 days ago. Eber Garcia Vasquez has been a Teamster for 26 years. We are all under attack and we all need to fight back.
“Thank you to the Dreamers who are inspiring us and continuing to fight. You are here to stay. The Teamsters stand with you.”
