The Teamsters are taking a leading role in helping to craft a new North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) that puts the people above the powerful. And tonight, Teamster General President Jim Hoffa will brief members about the union’s work.

Hoffa will be joined by Rep. Brian Higgins (D-N.Y) during the NAFTA teleforum, which Teamsters can preregister for here. Those signing up ahead of time will receive a call when the event starts at 8 p.m. EST, 5 p.m. PST.

The Teamsters have many concerns about the creation of a NAFTA 2.0, including the need to include a strong labor chapter that will create an even playing field and high standards for workers in all NAFTA countries. Any revamped agreement must include an increase in wages and worker rights if it is going to succeed.

Meanwhile, the Teamsters remain focused on the cross-border trucking issue as part of the trade deal. The Teamsters have briefed U.S. and Canadian officials on suggested language that would provide a level playing field, improve truck safety and boost working conditions and wages for Mexican drivers.

Other top issues include investor-state dispute settlement, protections against currency manipulation and the Buy American federal procurement program.
