Red Cross employees in Ryanham, Massachusetts, working as blood technicians and one phone recruiter, have voted to become members of Local 170. With these new members, along with members represented in Worcester and Springfield, there are now 85 Red Cross workers represented by the local union.
“We are pleased to welcome this new group of Red Cross workers into our local union,” said Shannon George, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 170. “As well as the current 73 Red Cross employees, we also represent about 220 medical technicians at St Vincent’s hospital in Worcester, so we have experience with members working in the medical profession.”
The local has already opened contract negotiations for the unit’s first agreement, with a priority on closing the wage gap and improving health benefits at a much better price point.
“I voted for the Teamsters after hearing from my union-represented peers in Worcester and Springfield, and comparing wages and benefits” explained Chanel O’Brien, a Red Cross blood technician.
These Red Cross workers join the more than 1,500 other Red Cross workers who are represented by the Teamsters from coast to coast.
