Just a few weeks after delegates at the Teamsters 30th International Convention voted to amend the Teamster Constitution to require rank-and-file members on all contract negotiating committees, Jared Lyons went to work.

Lyons, a member of Local 705, was appointed on July 16 to serve on the Teamsters National AEI (Air Express International) Negotiating Committee. Lyons’ appointment comes after Article XII of the Teamster Constitution was amended.

“It’s really an honor to be the first rank-and-file member to serve on this national committee,” said Lyons, a dockman who has worked at AEI for 21 years. “As a worker seeing what happens day to day, I can provide useful input for the committee.”

Last October, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Teamsters at AEI overwhelmingly approved a one-year contract extension through December 31, 2021.

Negotiations for a longer-term contract are continuing.
