(PHILADELPHIA) – Technologists in the quality control labs at the American Red Cross in Philadelphia have voted overwhelmingly to join Teamsters Local 929.
“Our goal at Local 929 is to organize the unorganized workers at Red Cross so they can improve their working conditions. We are thrilled to welcome more Red Cross workers to the Teamsters,” said Rocky Bryan Jr., President of Local 929. “These workers play a critical role in ensuring that the blood supply is safe for the public. They deserve union protections and a strong Teamster contract.”
“Since kicking off our American Red Cross organizing drive in November, we have organized more than 30 groups of workers across the U.S.,” said Jason Lopes, Teamsters Health Care Director. “This organizing victory is thanks to the hard work and collaboration of Local 929, the Teamsters’ Organizing Department, and the Public Services Division. We are ecstatic to welcome another cohort of Red Cross workers from Philadelphia to the Teamsters and can’t wait to organize many more.”
In voting to join the Teamsters, these workers will join more than 1,800 other Red Cross workers represented by the Teamsters – including more than 100 in Philadelphia – and will immediately be covered by a National Master Agreement between the Teamsters and the American Red Cross.
“I voted to join the Teamsters because I wanted to have a voice in my workplace,” said Herbert Villaizan, a technologist at American Red Cross in Philadelphia.
Teamsters Local 929 represents more than 2,700 working men and women in the Philadelphia area. For more information, visit teamsterslocal929.org
