(OAKLAND, Calif.) – Workers at VISTAR, a subsidiary of Performance Food Group (PFG), have voted overwhelmingly to join Teamsters Local 853. The group of 30 drivers organized to win stronger wages, better benefits, and improved working conditions.
“From the start of this campaign, these workers were determined to secure the dignity and respect that only a Teamsters contract can deliver,” said Steve Beck, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 853. “They stood together as one, and this decisive vote proves their unity and strength. We’re proud to welcome them to Local 853.”
The Teamsters represent 2,000 workers at PFG and its subsidiaries nationwide. Throughout Local 853’s organizing campaign, PFG deployed union busters in an attempt to intimidate workers and undermine their federally protected right to organize. Despite these tactics, VISTAR drivers held firm and voted overwhelmingly to join the Teamsters.
“We knew organizing was the only way to achieve real change,” said Jeorge Ponce, a driver at VISTAR and a new member of Local 853. “The company tried to divide us, but we stayed united because we deserve fair pay, better benefits, and a voice on the job. Now, as Teamsters, we’re ready to fight for a strong first contract.”
Teamsters Local 853 represents over 15,000 workers in a wide variety of industries throughout the Greater Bay Area. For more information, visit teamsters853.org.
