(ELIZABETH, Ind.) – After a 13-day strike, members of Teamsters Local 89 at Caesars Southern Indiana Hotel & Casino have overwhelmingly ratified a powerful five-year contract. The agreement secures significant wage increases, improved benefits, and stronger workplace protections for more than 140 workers.

“Right from the start, our members were determined to win the contract they deserved,” said Avral Thompson, President of Local 89. “Management forced us to the picket line, but we proved once again that Teamsters will never back down from a fight. This victory will deliver life-changing improvements for our members and their families.”

Owned and operated by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), Caesars Southern Indiana raked in more than $240 million in revenue last year, making it one of the most profitable casinos in the state. Workers were pushed to strike after management repeatedly failed to offer a contract that reflected the critical role they play in the property’s success.

“We showed management that we were determined to get a strong contract,” said Sandra Ramirez, a slot attendant at Caesars Southern Indiana and member of Local 89. “I’m proud to return to work under this new contract and look forward to all the improvements we fought for and won.”

The new agreement includes $5 per hour in wage increases over the life of the contract, improved 401(k) contributions, a $1,500 ratification bonus, stronger strike and picket line protections, safeguards against subcontracting, and protections against the introduction of new technology.

“Management underestimated our members, but they learned the hard way — you don’t win when you pick a fight with the Teamsters,” said Teamsters General Secretary-Treasurer Fred Zuckerman. “This contract showcases the strength and value of being a Teamster in the casino industry.”
