(LOS ANGELES) – Over 1,900 sanitation workers across Southern California represented by Teamsters Local 396 have ratified a new contract with the multibillion-dollar waste hauler Republic Services. Meanwhile, more than 1,400 waste workers at other companies represented by Local 396 continue to negotiate new agreements.

“Rank-and-file Teamsters stood together to take on one of the most irresponsible employers in America and negotiated a contract that sets the standard for the waste industry,” said Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien. “This is a great win for these hardworking Teamsters, but we are not done. Hundreds more Republic Teamsters across the country are bargaining new contracts this year. Republic Services, Waste Management, and every other company in this industry is on notice: the Teamsters will never stop fighting for the strongest contracts with the wages, benefits, and protections that our members have earned.”

Local 396 represents thousands of hardworking men and women who provide trash and recycling services throughout Southern California including Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and San Diego counties.

“Our members should be very proud of winning such a strong contract,” said Victor Mineros, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 396 and Director of the Teamsters Solid Waste and Recycling Division. “At Local 396, this victory is just the start. We still have plenty of work ahead to bargain strong contracts for the rest of our members in the sanitation industry.”

Republic Services is the second-largest waste company in North America and reported $16.6 billion in revenue last year.

“We won this contract from Republic Services by standing together, shoulder to shoulder across all our worksites, and classifications. That’s how solidarity is built,” said Jeremie Murray, a driver at Republic Services. “I look forward to seeing my Local 396 brothers and sisters at other companies win contracts just as strong as this one.”
