Teamsters Local 170 Members Gain Wage Increases and a Voice at Work
Workers with the Newbury Highway Department in Newbury, Mass., have voted unanimously to ratify a strong contract, securing wage increases and job protections. The highway workers, who are members of Teamsters Local 170 in Worcester, Mass., joined the union in December and quickly negotiated a solid agreement.
Highlights of the three-year agreement include:
- 11 percent wage increases over the life of the contract;
- Personal days;
- On-call pay;
- Work uniform allowances;
- Strong contract language and protections;
- A grievance procedure;
- And more.
According to Teamster organizer Paul Stuart, this was one of the quickest contracts Local 170 has negotiated and the workers were pleased with the ease of the process.
The Teamsters perform highway maintenance, including plowing, sanding, paving and road repairs.
“With the harsh winter weather we are experiencing in Massachusetts, our members are working as hard as ever to keep the roads clean and safe for everyone. The town of Newbury recognizes the valuable asset our members are to our community, and we are pleased to have negotiated a strong contract that honors their service,” said Mike Hogan, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 170.
